A bar-built estuary is a type of estuary formed when a sandbar or barrier island grows to partially or completely enclose a river or stream mouth, creating a protected, lagoonal area behind it. These features are built by ocean waves and currents and separate the calm waters of the estuary from the open sea. They are characterized by having a constricted opening, or inlet, and are common on gently sloping, tectonically stable coastlines with low tidal ranges.
